Asbestos roof

Just viewed a house and the estate agent says the small utility room built onto the kitchen has an asbestos roof. I looked outside and the panels look to be about a quarter of an inch thick and are pale brownish colour. There's a slate roof above.

Do these need to be removed and are they dangerous?

I am a first time buyer and intend to have a full building survey but any advice would be welcome.

Thanks

It would probably be safer to remove them, but asbestos doesnt cause any harm unless it is broken which spreads the fibres into the air

A full building survey will say

"you might have damp, get a damp specialist surveyor in" ditto asbestos, electricals problems, plumbing etc

Something isnt right here. Asbestos sheet is not normally light brown, nor is it normally 1/4" thick. If it really is both brown and asbestos, and you'd want to find out, then brown asbestos is one of the nasty types. While white doesnt worry me any, brown is known to have killed so many I'd personally take it out. This can be diyed, it is not compulsory to pay through the nose for someone to dress up in theatrical suits and do it. The other option is paint it. But it needs testing first, as it sounds more like fibreboard to me, which is no big problem.

brown,

asbestos,

Ah..... we know it's fibre board, the debate is about what type of fibre, jute or asbestos

Fibreboard and fibre cement board are 2 different things AIUI. Just prodding it would give some information, is it hard as rock or dentable with a finger nail. Thats what it sounds like, harmless stuff.
