Marble fireplace cleaning

Hi all, hope you can help. Just moved and the living room has a large marble fireplace which is heavily stained with soot, can anyone recommend a cleaning product or made up solution that will clean it safely. The marble seems to be a grey tone with black streaks if that makes any difference.

Soap and water if its just soot, however if its ground in soot/stubborn opt for a propriety brand cleaner for the purpose of cleaning marble as some cleaners can stain the marble or even discolour it. Pop into a gas fire showroom near you sometimes they have a cleaner for sale?

The museum people seem to go for a product called "Vulpex Spirit Soap" you can get this from all sorts of conservators suppliers like http://www.picreator.co.uk/articles/5_vulpex_liquid_soap.htm for example.
Might be worth looking throiugh some of the conservation websites, and the National Trust "Housekeeping Manual has a lot of information in it.
