Worktops: hiring a fitter

I want to replace the worktops + sink + taps in my kitchen. As I don't have a jigsaw and know nothing of plumbing, I'm thinking of hiring someone who does this professionally.

  • How long might this job take a professional? Two straight worktops, no joints needed, 2 x cut-outs for sink + gas hob.

  • If I bought the worktop + sink + taps myself, what sort of price would a fitter charge (West Yorks area)?

Thanks Bruce

Is that all you want done? No other related work, like splashback, wiring of hob etc? If so, then maybe half a day.

This is easy stuff. A mate of mine is a pro chippie and does this sort of bread-and-butter work on the rare occasions he gets quiet days. His day rate is £120, FYI. I'd imagine he'd do all of this in less than a day, and that's a careful job, not a bodge-up.

As for the bits then that depends how much you want to spend on materials eg tap prices range from very cheap to several hundred quid apiece! take a look at the B&Q website and the Bathstore website for starters.

Thanks, Dave.

The worktops measure about 3.5 m -- B & Q sell them in 3m strips. Is this a common size, or do wood-yards stock longer strips and cut off 2m sections, say, for the customer.

You can get worktops in 5m lengths as standard from companies who specialise in such things. Presumably the sheds don't do them that long because of space requirements and because a 5m long worktop won't fit on the average roof rack.

Sorry don't know the names of any companies but I'm sure a quick google would provide some names.

Trade suppliers do 4m lengths; they will cut, but you'll have to pay for full lengths.
