I'm not keen on anything that hopes to get people to migrate away from usenet, we know what facebook did to various once-popular groups.
If newsbadger speaks nntp, why doesn't it federate with e.g. eternal september as a web frontend? It shouldn't be hard to do a better job than google groups ...
A fair point but the ability to perform admin on groups is a benefit, e.g. Banishing trolls without the need to send often ignored abuse complaints to Usenet server admins.
There would be nothing stopping Newsbadger operating as a cleaned-up usenet feed for its own web users ... a kind of central killfile.
Agreed, I'm not advocating this, I too prefer real Usenet. I just think that RootBadger is relevant and worthy of a mention. Myself, I think the decline of Usenet is mainly due to it being a moribund collection of long-standing cliques populated by ageing users who are beginning to fall off of their perches. There's no cure for that.
I thought there was a suggestion upthread that a web-based forum which uses Usenet style threading might be desirable. Such could be more accessible to newcomers who don't have experience of real Usenet.
AIUI RootBadger aims to "keep it clean" and troll free and does so by being exclusive. It isn't part of Usenet at all, it's a web site that provides a set of aspects of the web including a set of forums that incidentally have been made accessible by NNTP. I don't think it's really breaking much new ground apart from adopting proper threading. It's new and in ongoing development by the Usenet user who built it. It could perhaps be a model for something provided by uk.d-i-y.
