Varnish

We have a 30 year old (not very expensive) sideboard that serves a useful purpose and is the right size so I don't want to replace it - but the top has got a bit marked by hot plates and scratches. I think the mahogony has been sprayed with a high gloss varnish finish. Any thoughts on refurbishment? I don't want to insult a French Polisher - but I am guessing a professional job might be needed to strip it and re- spray it. What should I be looking for?

If it's just the top, scrape the varnish off with a clean cut piece of glass or something else with a sharp edge (Stanley blades even). Tosh some Ronseal on.

Reminds me of the polisher I used to work with when I was in the TV repair game. Ted de Pol is what he answered to. Swore like a trooper, long dead now.

He has a toolbox just like that. The party trick he taught us was to wipe meths over a cabinet top then put a match to it. Sometimes marks would vanish, other times, when we were doing it, the rag would catch light and disappear under the bench. Happy days.
