Just an update-
I did it last night using a brass compression joint terminator which has held fine.
In the next few months the house is being entirely replumbed, so I'm happy to leave it as is till then.

About right. Cold water storage only, and I believe exempt from a BBA certificate. Poor flow mains, and the mains fills up slowly up to the static mains pressure (could be 1 bar or above). Maintains a constant pressure and high flow so thermostat valves required. Many are used in sports centres for the showers. They use cheaper simpler trouble free shower mixers. They mainatain say 1 bar, untill the water is exhausted from the vessel, then back to what the mains can deliver.
Some version may have pumps to incesae the pressure. Google Dual Stream in Newbridge who also have a combined unvented cylinder arrangement, although thermal store can be fitted to one, so all can be DIYed. Also:
Think giant potable water expansion vessel. Placed after a non return valve on the incoming water main. Ideal when there is a good static pressure but restricted flow, or when there are big periodic fluctuations in pressure.
