Stove surround - tiling?

Hi All,



I have a stove in a surround about 1.5m high X 1.3m wide X .7m deep. It sits in nicely into this space giving me space to stack logs either side. The problem is the surface of this surround which is plastered and painted is now cracking quite badly. My stove is high output - up to 14kw so it produces a lot of heat.



I think my options are


1) tile the surround - would tiles and grout withstand this heat?
2) Bricks - this option would mean that I lose space for stacking logs either side of the stove - could I use half brick?

What do you think?

Haven't got an answer but I'm interested in this as I'm going to install a stove in the summer and I'm preparing the fireplace now (old victorian house, original opening). My feeling is that either brick or tiles would be fine, although that is one hell of a heat output and it might be that the grout lines would open up. I'm sure you wouldn't get actual brick or tile cracking. At the moment all I've got is original brick and I'm debating whether it's too ugly to leave exposed.

Thanks Alistair for your comments. Might go with the tile - i've asked a few other people and they say tile should be ok.

Anyone else have any ideas?
