Setting up Windows 7 for the first time

Do you mean "clean"? Or do you mean Lenovo default? Very different beasts.

I would far rather do a complete reformatting install of W10 now than remain on Lenovo W7. And if you don't go for W10 before the one year offer, it will no longer be free. (Apparently.)

You do realise that end of life for W7 was 13 January 2015?

Not quite what I have read.

If you have a licensed and activated installation of W7, 8 or 8.1, you can upgrade to W10 fro free in its first year of release.

Once W10 has been installed, and activated, you can re-install W10 whenever you like.

I have not heard of any "can't do it again" limitations. It is possible, though, that you can't UPGRADE again, but only do a clean install. I'd welcome clarification if anyone has better information.

Eh? Do you actually mean XP? MS are still supporting Win7.

Hmm, the copy and paste ends up in a mess.

Best to search Microsoft and type in *End of life support for Windows 7*

Yup, extended support is 2020.

So roughly 10 years? Much the same as XP?

Yes, similar.

But that pretty much means security updates only. Unless you pay for Premier Support.

Even if it is just the security updates, they are the most important ones.

Crystal clean.

I have read every word. Thank you all. No action yet as there seems to be a major problem at our local exchange, scheduled for repair early next week. Upshot is, I seem to be able to up/download e-mail and news, but WWW is out of the question. Real PITA, but no point trying to download multiple updates etc.

That was my plan too

Question: when you do the upgrade, are you able to readily prepare fresh installation disks to replace the original Win 7 ones, in the event you need to do a fresh install in the future after the end of the free upgrade period?

Yes, search for "Media Creation Tool" you can make an .iso for burning to DVD or a USB stick.

I use only mvps. I found that adding other lists noticeably slowed down lookups on my ancient PC.

It would be nice if Hostsman could query the lists for the number of entries. I might be tempted to add one of those lists if it was short.

I tried removing entries in my hosts file from additional lists I had been experimenting with. I asked Hostman to get an update from only mvps but it said that the list was up to date and refused to download it.

I ended up deleting the hosts file and then waiting until mvps was updated at a later date so Hostsman would download it.

I read Martin's suggestion to mean copy the initial installation file from another PC, then run that as soon as the new PC is online, such as the installation file will connect and install without the user having to key an address.
