SDS Plus, Max or Not

I'm no expert but intend doing a fair bit of renovation and decided to invest in an SDS but....... what's the difference between Plus, Max or just plain SDS? Do they take different bits i.e. the fittings are different or is it something more sinister and therfore too complex for me a mere mortal man?

They are different fittings; AFAIK SDS Max is used by heavy duty tools (breakers) whereas SDS Plus is used by lighter tools; most likely that's the type you need unless you're doing a whole lot of tearing up of old floors or something.

Not sure about vanilla SDS - don't recall coming across that. Does it (still) exist?

Have look at the FAQ at:

Different bits. SDS Max is the biggest, and you won't need that unless you are drilling very large holes. IIRC, there are 3 splines on SDS Max bits. SDS Plus is the normal SDS bit, with 2 splines and 2 groves. SDS (plain) had died out before SDS became popular, and when you see it mentioned now, it really means SDS Plus.

SDS+ and plane SDS are not the same, an SDS bit with not fit securely and safely in a SDS+ drill chuck, different spline. SDS+ is now the standard on new (small) drills.

Thank you one and all. Very helpful although it took a moment or two for the ice cream comment to sink in - must get out more.

All clear now - thanks again.
