A bit bit of rat business in the back yard. They've nibbled a hole in the bottom edge of the shed door. Will a 1mm thick sheet of mild steel fixed to the lower face of this door going to discourage them enough?
I would put a rat trap inside the hole first and repeat until you stop catching any. It won't be a permanent cure, but it will reduce the local population a bit.
Well one has to check for other potential ways in or out. Might be worth getting a trap and setting it inside for a while to see if they have found the way back in. Brian
If they want to get in they will just nibble another hole at the edge of the sheet. Through the a joining walls or another weak spot where they can get their teeth in.
Don't underestimate a rats abilty to climb and grip, a counter sunk screw head is more than enough to hang onto or the edge of the sheet. To stop them reaching up those blemishes to the smooth steel they need to be at least 12" above where a rat can stand on it's hind legs. And don't build a staircase with screw head at the sides...
How would one stop the mild steel rusting away in short order.
