OT: Are hair clippers the new toilet rolls?

In a rare moment of inspiration I anticipated that shortage several weeks ago, so bought some clippers. Amazon estimated delivery May 20, then updated it to May 10, then said stock expected Apr 10. They were delivered Apr 8th.

Decided it was time to do something about my hair. Normally would have been cut the week I went into lock down.

Hacked it about a bit, then saw the results on Zoom ;-) and decided a No2 crop would be better. Got out the old clippers to discover they only ran for a few seconds, but the battery seems OK. (they can be run on mains too)

So decided to order up new ones online. Pretty well non existent. Even ultra expensive ones.

Unless anyone knows how to fix these Remington ones, bought from Lidl some years ago? They're quite clever, with a motorised setting for the length of cut.

Erm. How did you quantify the battery was ok when they only run for a few seconds on battery?

Didn't you say they 'they can be run on mains too'?

I wonder if you could get pet grooming clippers easier [1] as I believe they are fundamentally the same thing? Pet shops are still open as well?

Daughter used some on SGD (their normal one had been left elsewhere) and she suggested they were fine?

[1] Daughter has had to trim the Terrier herself as her usual dog groomer is shut down. Apparently he wasn't too keen (and she was probably taking longer than the pros) but has done enough to keep him cool in this warm weather and I'd say it looks pretty neat.

p.s. I asked her if she would continue grooming him herself, once things were back to normal and she said no. Too much stress for him, too much mess / effort for her, rather pay the 15 quid. ;-)

Because they do the same thing on mains too? On battery as often as you want to try it. Without the battery being obviously any lower.

I have had some Wahl mains clippers for many years. I'd appreciate the convenience of cordless but it doesn'tmake much difference - we have a weatherproof outdoor socket, and I always use them outside. Saves having to tidy upafterwards.

Wahl certainly are showing quite a number out of stock, but plenty in stock. I'd be surprised if a reasonable model isn't available, if not your first choice.

Or 'much better' in this case?

Ok .. ?

Erm ... lower ... 'without running out of energy before you are finished'?

Erm ... just so I'm clear here ...

So you are looking at buying a new one when the old one is actually working ok on mains?

I've had the Lithium Power Clipper for about 3 years (ok the writing rubs off the silvery bit, but that's not a problem).

+1 for Wahl. We've had ours for years and it's very good.

Until very recently, their UK operation ran from a warehouse a mile doen the road. With a 'factory shop'; that's where we got it. Also got other stuff there.

They've now moved to about 10 miles away, and no shop :(

-1 for Wahl.

I was given a new pair(?) by the hairdresser who used to come to ours but I couldn't use them because they were too loud.

Currently use a set (Remingtom possibly, I'd need to check) given to me by a mate years ago because he ended up with two pairs and they are much quieter and seem to cut better (/easier).

The Wahl's could have just been a bad pair of course but I question if people sometimes use them because the trade use/ed them? You won't get sacked for buying IBM etc?

Having access to spares is ok if you ever need spares?

My Wahl clippers are something like ten years old. They are incredibly solid - very much what a professional barbers might use. And very quiet. Most of the noise is conductive rather than through the air.

I suspect that newer, lighter-weight models might be noisier.

No, Much the same.

It would seem to be more likely some form of protection cutting in.

Where did I say it did?

I merely said that, unlike many cordless devices, the charger unit will run them even with flat batteries. On many the act of charging disables the device.

Same as my Scherna's (Thought they were Remmington, just checked, I've never heard of them).

Same here. I remember the Wahl's I had (may still have somewhere), they had a lever on the side for adjusting the cut length if I remember correctly?

Yes, I believe that is the case.

Mine weren't!

Not these, that's for sure. Sounded like a big end had gone!

I was given mine over 30 years ago now.

I'll see if I still have them and what model they are. Or can you get inferior quality clones possibly?

Completely unrelated to the Virus, I decided that I needed a Pulse Oximeter

Couldn't find one anywhere.

I'll wait until after the panic, I don't need it enough to pay premium prices

I found that the cheap home models came in two price ranges £20 and £30 with the more expensive often being labelled "advanced"

While searching for a manual for my blood pressure monitor a couple of days ago I came across

£33 including postage

Bought one for £18 this time last year, it doesn't have the perfusion index (whatever that is) so maybe it's not in the "advanced" range?

I just need it to give me a number between 0 and 99 (validly calculated, of course)

anything more is superfluous

Online at Argos? Just had a quick look and they have Babyliss models in stock for delivery or collection.

They don't look like the ones I have though (Babyliss Professional). Cheap when I bought them but still work perfectly after 30+ years.
