How to secure a window-box?

What is the best way to make sure a window-box does not blow down in a gale?

Hi Tim,

Depends - what's the box like and what's the wall made of?

Plastic? Put some old sash weights in the bottom. Terra cotta types don't move IME. Whatever type, keep them well watered. I use a vermiculite/compost mixture, which should make them lighter but, in fact, makes them heavier due to the extra water holding capacity.

L brackets on the window sill to stop the box falling off.

Eyelets screwed into wall and box and chained together.

Move somewhere they'll get pinched before any sign of a gale.

The window-box is terracotta, and quite heavy. However, it did fall in a gale 2 years ago, and made a hole in a roof (not mine) below.

Heavy iron brackets bolted into the wall then.

The brackets should be upturned at the front so that it can't slip off in the wind.

Or if you are sitting this on the window cill (you don't say), then bolt some straight iron strips to the front of the cill so they stand up in front of the box to prevent it slipping off.

If you need weird shaped iron, and don't have the facilities to bend it, find a blacksmith - but what you need could be done with some flat bar, an engineers vice and a club hammer.
