You do NOT have to put the trickle vent in the window. Unless te geregs have changed recently.
Anywhere in the wall will also do above certain height.
Put a 4" pipe through the wall and stick a fan louver outside and a 'hit and miss' cover inside.
For replacement windows the *requirement* for them was rescinded last October:
"3.4 Where the original windows were fitted with trickle ventilators the replacement windows should include them and they should be sized as set-out in paragraph 3.6. It would be good practice to fit trickle ventilators (or equivalent), with accessible controls, in all replacement windows to help with control of condensation and improve indoor air quality."
Check if the locking mechanism allows the to be shut in a "slightly open" position - since this is also acceptable in place of a trickle vent. You may find that even if the closers are not of this type they can be retrofitted.
Dunno. But if I may hijack your thread... is it possible to retro fit them on a (fitted) uPVC window? (Got a tenant with condensation problems and am mulling over how best to resolve it).

No. Punch a hole through the wall instead.
