Hole in joist

I *think* that *probably* what happens is that you put in a raised shower now, which your wife deals with quite nicely for the time being. If your wife's condition deteriorates, SS sends someone round to add some grab handles at different places in the house, so she can manage a bit longer.

Eventually, you re-evaluate the position entirely, and someone (possibly SS) installs a wet room on the ground floor.

Sorry to depress you. :(

I don't fancy grab handles on my totally plasterboard walls.

Prefectly OK if they are tiled over or you cut the plasterboard out, fit marine ply and then tile over that.

When MIL needed grab handles, one of them was fitted in the doorway to her bedroom so the door would not shut.

or you do it right now. Adding a gentle slope upto the tray wouldn't be ideal.

Grab handles can be mounted on wood & screwed through to the uprights behind the PB.
