easier dig 2m foundations

Anyone know of a method of digging deep foundations easier than mini-digger in a limited space ? For example, I need some 2m foundations which is quite deep, liable to trench collapse, and is near a deep sewer, may need shuttering etc. I can imagine digging say the bottom metre using some sort of hole-digging device / big corkscrew or whatever, producing what you could call mini-piles. Pour each hole individually, allow to set, dig next one etc. I would just need a suitable device. I'm sure I've seen such a thing on the back of a tractor. A 2m trench seems deep, but a 2 meter "hole" does not, particularly. Any thoughts ? Simon.

If you wanna drill a hole, you put an arger on a digger, tractor, bobcat etc ....

You can also get hole boorers that are mounted on trailers, and manhandled into place. Normally used for dirlling wells and the like.

You can also get trenchers, agatn attached to tractors and the like.

You could hire a bunch on Indians, who would do this using tea spoons. You would have to source the workers direct from a construction site in Bombay, pay all flights etc ....

If I could convice the BCO, and hire of such a device was cheap enough, I could avoid getting ground workers in. Oh, also also convince the water board that the foundations would be OK near their sewer. I'll investigate. Cheers, Simon.

I doubt that your BCO would allow a series of unconnected concrete cylinders - they'll want to see a continuous slug of concrete which stays in one piece and doesn't allow any relative movement.

The way the foundations are constructed should either have been passed in by Building Regulations, or you should be having this discussion with a BCO who I doubt will be very happy with this idea.

I suppose you could use piles if the foundation was properly designed to use them (although they'd probably need to be a fair bnit deeper), but piling is a fairly specialist operation and in no way a straight substitute for normal foundations. One of the features of a strip foundation is that the concrete is a continuous lump - even with a simple trench full of concrete you can cause problems by not pouring in one go.

I would like to see the BCO's face when you talk him through your idea The reason that every other builder would just dig it with a machine i because it's the only way to do it, you may have to finish off by han if your mini wont reach but hey, buildings hard work sometimes. I there is any danger of collapse you will have to shore up as you go. BTW if you look into the cost of piling I think you will gladly choos the pick and shovel
