Earlobe pulse sensor - repair

My elderly Thor exercise bike has an earlobe sensor and it uses the sensed heart rate to vary the resistance - but the sensor has become unreliable. It doesn't seem to be a broken wire so my guess is that either the LED or the detector (or, I suppose, the amplifier) have degraded. Has anyone successfully fixed a similar problem? Alternatively, can the sensors be easily bought?
