Brick BBQ

I am considering building a wood burning BBQ from Bradstone walling blocks. Bradstone say I can use any type of walling block as long as the flames don't come into direct contact with the blocks. My idea is to have a masonry hearth on which my fire is placed, with a metal plate as the cooking surface as opposed to using a grill. Can anyone suggest on the best way to do this and the type of bricks & walling blocks I should use. TIA

I used some Cotswold buff type walling blocks to build my charcoal barbecue. I took no precautions against fire damage whatsoever and flames were in direct contact with the blocks. The blocks go slightly pink until covered by a block sooty patina after about one BBQ season (depending on usage, of course). It was still standing and looking very nice when I sold the house.
