Beat the burglar.

Interesting programme on the BBC this morning. A staged burglary of a carpenter's home.

All the information in the world isn't a lot of use if you don't apply it.

9:15 BBC 1.

In 15 minutes including the getting in and getting out, the ex con had taken thousands from the young couple and stripped the man of his means of earning a living.

Interesting essay on how to pack in an hurry if you get nothing else out of it.

At one time that would have been a hanging offence. perhaps we're less civilised now ...

Bear in mind an electrical fault, gas explosion or chip pan fire could do the same thing in the same amount of time.

I saw this, and was intrigued so am taping the rest.

Following what I've seen, I've re-evaluated what I do for security in my home. I've fitted some extra locks/bolts, and am using them.

They're useful programmes to see just how useful so many 'everyday' things are to help them get inside the house. For instance...

Net curtain wires with hooks on the end - reach in, grab one from the window, and then use it to hook the keys out of the door. Done in just a few seconds, and no loud noises to alert any neighbours (though, it seems, neighbours are useless at spotting burglars). Simple steps to avoid that being used - fit the eyes on the curtain wires, not the hooks, and of course, don't leave the keys in the door, and leaving even the smallest window open is an invitation.

Oh, and burglars don't like venetian blinds - they rattle loudly, get in the way, and generally tangle the burglar up.

Been a real eye opener to just how fast they work, too. The 'just pop down the shops for half an hour, won't bother shutting all the windows' is plenty of time for them to get in, get the stuff, get out.

In some cases 3 minutes is enough, eg when theyre after one item rather tha everything.
