Any HETAS bods here ?

Fitting a log burner in the next week - have all the bits ready and just going through them I find the adapter is VERY loose inside the stove pipe. The stove pipe is 125mm and the adapter is 115mm so its rattling around inside it! I would have thought it should be a snug fit, couple of self tappers and a smear of fire cement? I ve had VERY little help from the company I bought them from on- line.

I just cant see how to get a good mechanical joint between the two let alone be airtight !

It I rotate the pipe the "wrong way around" then the adapter fits snugly into the male and of the stove pipe but the female end wont fit into the collar on the stove as its got a lip on it !

I've called the local fitters but the prices are unbelievable for what's done! one wants =A3250 just for dropping the flue down the chimney - nice little earner for less than an hour's work.

well fireflay will work for anything, but it sounds like you have te wriong parts

It took for of s and full scaffolding to get a twin walled flue down a chimney and past a dogleg and into position where the stove could be installed, and took a whole afternoon to do it.

£250 cheap at half the price >

It's a pretty normal price which I think is fair when you realise:

a) The bloke needs van and ladders and tools;

b) Insurance;

c) HETAS membership;

d) Is risking his arse going up on the roof,

e) The "hour" (which is probably a reasonable estimate for a simple job once everything is together on site) does not include travelling to site and back, collecting materials etc. And there's always a buggeration factor to work in for the odd weird job. Not to mention the original visit to quote/measure etc (that's not free even if it is not explicitly charged for).

f) All the other overheads, eg taxes etc.

In reality after all the accounting is done, he's not getting *that* much.

Now, when a gas bloke wants £1200 plus parts for a day's work of installing a boiler (where the day will include collecting materials and travelling) and where everything (plumbing, gas, electrics) is within easy reach of the boiler site, I regard as taking the michael!

Sorry but I disagree, and its why the country is in a right old state ! fair days wage for fair days work is fine. Personally I think =A3250 an hour or even with "faffage" taking 2 hours so =A3125 an hour is bloody madness. You can take as much insurance, travel etc out of that and still come up with one hell of a return. As for the Gas quote on here, the guy should be given a good slap for quoting that !

I assume you've never run your own business?

Do not underestimate overheads for they are many.
