Aggregates for the garden ?

Hi

Want to put small stones (aggregates) on part of the garden to make paths etc.. Something larger than pea shingle. Two questions...

(a) How much of the stuff per square meter (I have seen a suggestion that

1 tonne covers 20-25 sq.m) (b) Anyone recommend a suppier in the Norwich area

I've looked in the Sheds, but they sell small bags at what seems like high prices! Found an on-line supplier but not local.

Thanks JR

Gravel is almost dirt cheap, it is the transportation that costs. Don't phone; go to the various local quarries and select the type of stone you want. Also the quarries pile it in grades according to particle size.

When I had to cover a drive in Surrey with 3/4" shingle I phoned aroung several companies advertising aggregate supplies. Eventually I found a very nice man local to me who delivered the 6 tonnes I needed for £60.

He even scoped out the site and gave me advice on which aggregate to use before delivery. Try Yellow Pages, and talk to the body on the other end of the line.

That's crushed concrete pricing. You hit the jackpot there.

Sir, Phone up the big quarry compaines, and ask what they charge. 1 cubic meter is about 2 tonne. Lorries are 10, 16 & 20 tonne but don't need to be full.

I get 20 tonne of slate scalpings (50mm->dust) for 200 quid delivered, the bit of my drive that has it looks quite good.

It's been "several years" since I lived in Surrey. IIRC £60 was about

2/3 of the price that the builder's merchants were charging at the time.

One good place at fairly high prices is Kent Blaxill, In Bury StEdminds.

A lot depends on whether fancy stuff is required, or just plain old shingle. If the latter look up under gravel or sand and aggregates in yellow pages.

About 30 a ton for a ton bag, about 12-15 a ton in 20 ton tipper loads. Up to 50-60 a ton for decorative chippings.

I think I reckoned a pound per sq. meter roughly, which makes an average

20 quid a ton bag do 20 sq. meters.

If you put gravel down it slowly sinks in and needs topping up. One can sprinkle cement powder on the earth first and rake it in. This much reduces the problem.

and Sheringham Take the Beeston turning off of the A148 and you'll find it. I haven't got the current price list but the collect it yourself price for builders sand was 16 pounds a ton last year so they're cheap. OK I use a LandRover to get it but several friends have just lined their boot with plastic and just started shovelling (you'll need a shovel). The Q
