Can a Pyrex double boiler be used in direct contact with a ceramic glass cooktop without the use of a wire diffuser?

Mrs. used to do that all the time. We were never told that wire diffuser was reuquired.
Neither the cooktop, nor the pyrex, seemed to have suffered from this abuse. NOTE: hate both for cooking.
