Thread insertt/adaptor

I need to reposition the coolant sensor on the old Rover. Just an inch or so to where the thermotime switch was.

The CTS thread is 10x1.5mm

The thermotime 14x1.5mm

I can buy a blank 14x 1.5mm plug in brass. Is it going to be practical to drill and tap it to 10x 1.5mm? as the two threads are so close in size? Or would steel be better? Obviously, I'd prefer brass.

I'd buy a piece of brass and make a longer connector if possible. I suspect that the chance of metal fracture is rather great with only a mm or 2 to play with. Do any of the hydraulics companies make an adaptor in these sizes?

Long, long while ago now but I recall hiring a kit for re-threading a stripped hole in a cast iron head. Can't remember if it was ignition plug or studs of some sort.

Basically you tapped a new, larger diameter thread in the old hole and then inserted a flat steel coil spring to bring things back to the original size.

As your thread pitch is the same, I wondered if this might do:-)

Sounds like a helicoil.

Couple of helicoil inserts?

Sorry - the 1.5 refers to the thread pitch as there are different ones used on the same diameter sometimes.

The blank is longer than the thread on the sensor, so will be cut to length anyway. I was more concerned about the wall thickness - ie is it sufficient at only around 2mm?

I'd have thought you should be able to get away with it with care. Brass should tap cleanly, the insert will all be in compression when it is in position. I'd be inclined to anchor it with loctite and probably put loctite on the sensor as well as, presumably, you don't expect to change it again.

Might be best to tap the insert "on the bench" after putting it in a temporary tapped hole in another bit of brass. That way you get to inspect your handiwork, and presumably inserts are cheap so you can easily have another go. OTOH if you loctite your insert in the block/head first and let it set, it's secured better. Difficult call, what's the access like for tapping?
