Suitable job for *novice* plumber?

No, because the Myson flexi's are definitely continuously rated for circa 80 deg C water and every other commonly (i.e. cheap and from a shed or plumbers merchant) available flexi that could possibly be adapted for this installation has a published limit of around 60 deg C, that's not to say they won't work, just that they might not and the consequences of failure are pretty messy.

If the compression fitting has been overtightened and damaged the pipe then you might have to cut the pipe and fit the new fitting slightly closer to the heater body. To make the job easy then get a 15mm pipe slice such as this:

Again guys thanks for all the help. I've contacted Myson r.e. a replacement hose and I will also attempt to

a) Tighten the compression joint a bit

and if this fails (which I suspect it will)

b) replace it

Have you tried drying it off and seeing where the water comes from? You might need a mirror and torch.

I think it's the valve AND the compression joint: I have seen drips forming in both spots. TBH I suspect I broke/loosened the compression joint with all my "yanking round".
