OT Real Cost of Renewables

According to DT today a gas power station recently was paid £1000 (one thousand pounds) per MWh when the wind stopped blowing this week. In November one was apparently paid £2500 per MWh. Makes HPC look a real bargain, decommissioning costs and waste disposal included.

Are they being paid to have a power station available full-time but only run at times of exceptional demand?

But presumably only for a single half hour period. (I understood the "Pool" system following privatisation, but am not familiar with "NETA", the new electricity trading arrangements).

The point about the £90 or so HPC price is that it is a constant baseline price over decades of continuous operation.

24/7 just like generating capacity needs to be, not like stupid pointless intermittent renewables.
