Notched trimmer beam

Hi,

I was having a look at my floor joists around the stairwell (basically to see if any of the walls downstairs were loadbearing) and I noticed that the trimmed joists appear to be slotted into notches in the trimmer beam rather than being on metal hangers. Was this normal practice ?(built 73). I can't see if the trimmer beam is a single or double joist. Notch appears to go 3/4 depth of beam but I guess could be staggered if a double thickness trimmer beam.

Many Thanks

Jim

It's called a "tusked tenon" joint. It's loads bearing and basically consists of a step and a splay in the mortice of the trimming joist with the corresponding step etc in the tenon of the trimmer joist and all held together with a wedge - this joint is as old as the hills and preceded metal hangers by a long time.

Oops. I might have misread this post and replied incorrectly. Slots and tusk tenons are not that similar. :-(
