New Solid Wood Floor

Having ripped up an old chipboard floor, I would like to lay a solid wood floor directly onto the joists (400mm span). My main worry is I've been told by a wood floor company that I will need a noggin for each joint that isn't over a joist. If this is so, it'll end up being a solid lump of wood under my floor!

I want to avoid a sub-floor if possible as this is in an extension and top of the joists there are the same level as the top of the floor boards in the old bit of the house (don't ask, I didn't do it!!!).

If you use end-matched boards (ones with T&G along the ends as well as along the lengths) you don't need noggins to support the joins. This assumes a hardwood floor - if softwood, I would be inclined to use noggins at all joins.
