My bodge of the week

Kitchen mixer was leaking from the swivel joint. Bought O rings from the shed. I found one the right diameter, but it was too thick. Filed some of the rubber off with a metal file, and eventually it fits!

This would be so much easier if I had a proper set of O rings with different diameters and thicknesses. Any suggestions, please?

If you spend several days searching the internet you will almost certainly get lucky.

My set of sample window gaskets (rubber beads) is looking promising when all the local glaziers said of my aluminium windows "sorry guv, can't get the parts"...

It was not an instant search mind - it really took me a lot of searching adjusting search terms.

Several seconds gives you endless options

IME (with other things) it will often give several *similar* options.

Sometimes with the more obscure things, they are out there, but you need to either god several pages into the listings or adjust the search terms.

But the initial searches often help as sometimes they give you alternative nomenclature. I would not have thought to search for "gasket". Window rubbers are "beading" to me - but in glazing circles, "beads" are the metal/plastic/wooden strips that retain the glass...

I bought a set from Aldi or Lidl tears ago, similar to this one, but about £5;

I've only used about a dozen, but every time a life saver :-)

Think Aldi's are a bit on the small side for that ...

I bought a lidl/aldi set some time ago and it is fine. Whilst doing a mixer similar to yours I found it a bit tight so dropped down a couple of sizes (diameters) and stretched it to fit, it is now perfect.

Aldi has those in stock now. Oddly labelled as tap washers.

I have got several selection boxes. But never have the one needed. ;-)

That is what I fear. Don't they come in several different thicknesses? Multiply that by the different diameters, and even a selection box with

32 sizes in may not be enough.

Perhaps they do a jumbo set for those of an anxious disposition :-)

Agreed.

Also sets available from SF, TS, and (I think) BES. Trouble is, they all tend to be a similar, often rather small "chord diameter", i.e. the thickness of the rubber. Suitable for many applications but not all.

ISTR that Bearing Services "trade" shops used to carry a good stock, but I havn't used (or even seen) one for ages.
