Garage conversion and joist hangers

Hello

I wonder if anyone can help? My house has a double garage that is partially integral to the house. The garage roof is supported by trusses that follow the roof line down from the house.

The garage conversion will convert half of the garage to a room and I need to install two additional joists from below across the garage to support an extension to the bathroom above. The joists will span the outside (single skin brick wall) and an internal cavity wall. What's the best way to install the joists? I can't do it from above as the exiting roof trusses are in the way and if I use conventional joist hangers from the walls the joists wont go in. Are there any specialist joist hangers that allow the joist to be put in place from the side or do I need to form an opening in one of the walls?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Dave

I've just had to replace a couple of joists from below, and had a similar problem, I modified the joist hangers so they would fit flush to the two walls, put the joist in position then screwed the hangers to the walls with the joist in position and supported.

You can angle grind or drill out, or both, a groove in the wall to slide in a standard hanger and then screw it into the wall for extra security. I think just screwing is fine, but better safe than sorry.

If you are talking about the sort of hanger you bolt to the flat surface of a wall, then they easiest way is to fix one side of it firmly, now bend it open so the second side is horizontal, slide the joist into position and bend the hanger back upright before fixing the second side.
