The power company was blamed for starting some of the wild fires in California so has decided to take the safe way out and cut power for the expected storm. No power or gas for days in parts.

I don't think that a utility company, provided it has failsafe systems in place, for damage in a storm. That is an act of god, and God never pays his premiums. Brian

The problem is failsafes eat in to valuable profits - much like having to keep spare capacity.
Always best to swerve any supplier trading on being 100% efficient since it means they are 0% prepared for anything untoward.

It can be *dancing* overhead lines coming into contact rather than contact with blown debris. I'm not sure how any such arching would ignite dry undergrowth.
Our supply experts may explain:-)

A bit of twig blown up there could be set on fire by an arc. And if the lines are dancing in the wind, it'll come down.

Trivially fixed with the spreader bars you see on well designed power lines.

You get molten metal where the lines touch that falls on the dry undergrowth and sets fire to it.

They probably have them, but its too late if the first spark starts a fire. You need to be able to predict the sparks, which is what they have done, storm coming, sparks, fires, law suits.
Turn of power, no sparks, no law suits.
People may die but they have been warned there will be no power for days, no law suits.
Its all down to the lawyers, maybe someone should sue them?

Yes, pretty stupid to have a legal system where its cheaper to cut off the power to all users than face the possible punitive damages that can bankrupt you.
Even if they did cause some of the fires by not cutting down other peoples trees it wasn't them that caused the deaths, it was people not evacuating when they were told too.

Although PG&E can take some blame for not doing appropriate tree-trimming (as can UK Power Networks, we had another 10sec power cut last evening).
But I've always said that in the USA you don't get justice, you get law - and plenty of it. It's what happens when you elect judges - they become more open to bribes and they need to look tough to help their re-election chances.

Whereas with European Commissioners, it seems it's the other way round.
It's because they're not elected, that they're more open to bribes.

In fact there will always be law suits from those who arent getting the power they are paying for.

There will be law suits from the relos of those who have died because there is no power to keep them alive and from those who are less comfortable than they would be with the power supplied and those who no longer have the power to use to stop their house catching fire etc.

Still the fixed per day charge, fuckwit.

Irrelevant to what you can sue for with the US system.
