That seems to be what /my/ meters use, there may be other standards.
I'm not sure if it's encrypted to death or reports you to e.on for tinkering with the meter as soon as you try to talk to it :-)

I was going to say power isn't a problem for an electricty meter and a small rechargeable battery will keep it alive through powercuts. They have been doing this for ages, even back to clockwork for E7 meters.
Can't see why they can't have a little magnetic spinner in the gas flow and a coil to pickup a bit of power to charge a battery.
From what I've gathered HMG just told the power comapnies to do it, so they have, but with no specification they've all gone their own seperate ways...
Sainsburys are quite competitive at the moment.
Our local council is currently offering a FairerPower deal in collaboration with OVO and Sainsburys beat them by about £80 but they do have penalty clauses of about £30 per fuel IIRC

It's because, for the meter to be outside, which is what the utility company prefer, water pipes have to be underground, gas/electricity supply don't.

how is this WiFi device supposed to connect to some global network to send its data back?
(several answer are available, but all of them have problems. I'm genuinely interested in how people think that this might work)

Diverting a little, I see that California had a bit of a power surge yesterday in one area and all the smart meters apparently popped!
Apparently their equivalent of 11kV and 230V lines can exist on the same poles, and what happened is the HV circuit made contact with the LV circuit ... how would a |UK non-smart, but electronic meter fare with such an over-voltage?
