or any other forum/bulletin board service ? I find it very hard to follow and a lot of work just to read a thread, usenet is far more user friendly IMO.

or am I missing something about yahoo groups... like how to follow a thread without sifting through loads of other messages, ads and having to flick back and fore between pages ?

They do have some value if properly done.

These are generally moderated and subject matter is usually on or close to topic for a higher proportion of the time. There is normally very little flaming if any.

Yahoo in particular also offers quite good archiving as well as file and picture storage.

I belong to a specialised Yahoo one for owners of Austrian manufactured Felder woodworking machinery. (Felder Owners Group). There are a mixture of U.S. and European/other country participants.

Posts can be made or read by email and/or by use of the web site. There is a files area with information that is regularly needed by new owners, details of accessories made by or which can be bought from users, pictures of how to do setups for particular tasks and so on. Everything is in one place. The moderators do a very good job of keeping the group/site in a tidy condition, so it's a valuable resource. Various staff members from the company participate regularly and it becomes a valuable feedback for them on what their customers think. New ideas are implemented as a result, quite often.

I find this one really useful.

There are of course, a lot of rubbishy groups as well. I think that it's a different thing to Usenet and both have their value.

I don't like attempts on web sites to import and export Usenet. Almost all of them are done poorly, especially those who whould know better like Google.
