OT - Berni Inn

What happened to this chain? We were reminiscing over dinner today and none of us knew the story behind the demise of the chain.

Such a positive, knowledgeable and helpful group!

What Newsgroup would you suggest for such a question? Googling hasn't been very fruitful yet.

The most recent info I can find is that Whitbread aquired Berni Inns from Grand Metropolitan in 1990,

but watch this space,

unless of course you are completely uninterested :-)

Many thanks - they just seemed to disappear from the cityscape. I suppose they made a significant contribution to changing the eating-out habits of a generation.

Berni Inns.

Started by a couple of Italian brothers with the surname of Berni. One specialised in catering the other in accountancy. First pub/restaurant was in Bristol. Introduced place mats without table cloths and disposable napkins to save laundry costs. Served good quality meat bought cheaply from South America. Expanded and bought Schooner Inns, which they rebranded as Berni Inns. Travelling service engineers in the 70's noticed Schooner Inns and Berni Inns had the same VAT No. and the same address - "The Pithay", Bristol.

Eventually in the '80s (90's?) the Berni brothers sold out to Whitbread for several million pounds who re-branded the chain and absorbed the restaurants into their "Beefeater" brand.

And now if you want a decent steak you have to DIY !
