OT - Air Travel - baggage - OT (Rant)

I heard that charges are now being made of a person takes 2 items even though it is within the weight allowance (reasonable if only a couple of quid as it needs to be handled and registered) - Yet Sports items such as surf boards can continue to go free of charge!!!!

Where is the logic?

If I want to take my power tools and workmate bench I will get charged - but if it is sport equipment it goes free. Why???????????????/

I've enquired with a few airlines WRT taking sports equipment (fishing) and they all charge extra, likewise golf clubs.

Easy. Get a golf bag/cricket bag/high jump pole bag and put your luggage in that...

Snow ski equipment

One pair of skis and ski poles or a snowboard or a monoski. Plus one pair of ski boots and Bindings.

Snow Ski Equipment that falls within this definition is carried free in addition to your normal baggage allowance, until 30th April 2007. A maximum weight of 23kg (51lbs) applies to each bag.

Golfers and other sports persons are considered "good business" and not to be lost to another airline. Robert

Simple.

1) There is a cost per item as well as a cost related to the weight.

2) The number of outsized sports items is very small across a range of flights and the PR value exceeds the cost

3) Regular travellers are soft targets and will pay or travel in business class.

The more serious problem is the limitation to one item of cabin baggage. This is a huge time waster

I try not to have any cabin baggage - perhaps just my coat. Also I get fed up with having to queue to get to my seat because of people standing to stuff things into overhead locker. Somewhat different for business travel where one needs a quick get away and isn't checking in any hold luggage.

Take the point on PR value - but cant see why snow boarders are a better prospect for good PR than a family going for a beach holiday.

Only because all of the knobends who either don't know the rules or (more likely) think they don't apply to them.

I get even more irritated by the once a year travellers who don't know to go through security or to get on and off planes quickly.

Precisely, and this is where most of their revenue comes from.

Perhaps they have baggage in the hold!

What annoyed me on my last flight from Geneva with BA, was that shortly before departure two desks were rolled out. No explanation was given but a queue was formed by people who knew that they had they had to go and have their boarding cards and passports re-checked, and answer questions like "Are you going to London" with a ticket showing LGW. Evenually there was an annoucement, telling everyone present that they had to be checked.

Never understood why they dont board starting with the rows furthest away ie middle outwards if 2 entrances, rear if front entrance. Robert

Lufthansa tried that for a while and discovered that overall it didn't make any difference.
