Hot Tub broken by teenagers!

-------------------------------------

Came home from a weekend away to be told by my son that the tub had 'gone dead' Apart from the sickly colour of the water I was told they had only spent four hours in it!

The water level had gone down by four inches.

It turned out that the main trip had blown.

When I turned it back on the tub came back to life ok apart from two things. 1: The top side controller back-light didn't come on; and 2: The circulation pump runs ok but when I selected full speed the pump makes an awful 'stalling' sound and after a few seconds the display shows error 'FLO'.

The tub underwater light comes on ok and the pump that pushes air up through the water works ok.

Can anyone throw any light onto my problem?

I doubt the 2 problems are related. I don't know what backlighting technology they use, so can't shed any light on that or tell you if it's repairable without changing the display.

With the pumping issue, given that teenagers were involved, my first suspicion would be that a foreign object is somehow lodged in the intake system. Normally, that can't happen without someone doing something stupid, like taking a filter out or removing a cover screen. You did check the filter right? Hot tubs should have at least 2 water intakes, one through the filter, the other at bottom of tub, usually with just a screen.

You're posting from the stuccocompany which is not going to win any friends in this newsgroup, alt.home.repair. You have three hot tubs with the same problem, or you just posted the same message 3 times, or the stuccocompany posted it 3 times?

Pizza in the pump.

Some kind of serious multi-posting problem.

Look for a pair of nylon panties plugging up the system.

...weekend away...hottub...son

It's jammed up with g-strings & condoms. Also check for rinds about the size that would be put in drinks.

Sounds like the kid had a good excuse. NOT!

Call the spa guy and have the kid pay for it. Something is plugging the flow, and disassembly is required to get it out. Unless you are familiar with these things, they can be very very very expensive to have fixed if you go digging into them, and THEN have to have the spa guy come out and fix whatever was wrong in the first place, and then fix whatever you messed up.

It is impossible to get a pair of nylon hose stuck in there unless you take off the filters. FLO warnings can be for a variety of reasons. There is a user serviceable fuse on the circuit board that is held on by two clips. About as big as a small Tootsie Roll, and about $7 at the Borg. You may be lucky, and that is what it is. Other than that, if it is plugged with something, then disassembly is required. If the heating element is out, or just went out, you will also get a FLO message. The backlight not working indicates something entirely else wrong.

Try the fuse first. Be sure to cut it off at the breaker.

Have it fixed and make the kid(s) pay for it as a good lesson. Does it have a sickly color when YOU use it? That's your first hint. Time for him to man up.

Waste water treatment plants, in the past, had to deal with undissolvable condoms. Had to stop everything and manually clean the filters. But that was years ago and they might have solved the problem by now.

You might check with your local water treatment plant for information on the problem.

Yea, I think the "man" one goes for that. Or is it the woman-man that wears them? Oh crimus, I really have no idea about that stuff. Hot tub full of "guys" and I 180 and go watch old Andy Griffith episodes.

Well, not now, ya dope. They're stuck in the pipes. Sheesh.

After considering your post, I am left wondering "do you really want to know what's down there?" Maybe it's best to just call the repairman and not know what your teens did while you were away.

Reply: Sounds like today's approach to raising healthy children. Parents pay for kids f*ck up and don't even ask the kid any questions. Lots of kids sitting in jails and prisons today raised like that.

Cliff, in the science fiction literature, there is a story about an alien culture that wanted to create an "invisibility ray". Whatever it was aimed at would just disappear. They were spending a lot of their currency on it, with minimal results. Then someone discovered that if they simply put a sign on whatever they wanted to make disappear, it would happen.

The sign said "S.E.P.". It stands for "Someone Else's Problem". If it were someone else's problem, it would...simply...disappear.

Your son, who is apparently old enough to be able to use the house in your absence, has done something with the hot tub, and has now attempted to put it into the "someone else's problem" category. I suggest that letting him be successful at that may not be the best way of helping him develop awareness of personal responsibility.

Has very little to do with the hot tub, but a lot about parenting.
