How to configure baseboards for stairs?

Looking for ideas.

There is a wall with a running baseboard. Then the wall ends where there is a two step (8" drop each step) into a sunken living room. The sunken living room also has a running baseboard.

How would you connect the two baseboards across the two steps of stairs? Do you run it such that it follows the stairs as it go across and down? Do you draw a line between the top of the baseboards on each end and install a baseboard by knotching its bottom to fit the stairs? or is there any other good ideas?

You don't typically configure the baseboard around the treads and risers. At the top you would stop at the door frame. Bottom dies into the first riser.

Another way it's done is a notched finish decorative stringer is nailed against the wall, above the stair carriage. Your baseboards terminate into each end.
