roof shingles are deteriorating. Can I replace them one-by-one?

There are just a couple of them that look kind of funny. It's a low roof on the garage side and I think I can manage to get to them. Just don't want to mess it all up by lifting a shingle in the middle of a row since they are overlapping.

Yes, you can replace individual shingles (asphalt, I assume?). You'd need a flat pry bar and you would have to start by lifting a shingle two rows above the bad one to get access to the nails that are holding the one you are replacing. Since it's easier to replace just one tab of a shingle you would also need  a tube of the roofing tar sealant to seal the seams between the shingles on the left and right in the same row. Get some 1-1/4" roofing nails and a pair of good tin snips to cut the replacements to size.

If shingles are deteriorating, it's probably time to replace the whole roof.  This shows that the shingles have become unable to protect your home from the weather.  This is not something that you want to let go.  Replacing sections of single should only be used in situations where there was an identifiable issue that you are fixing.

Have you tried consulting a roofing expert to check that out for you? He or she might be able to give you a good recommendation on what you can do to fix your roof. That way, you'll be able to make the most economical decision to fix your roof.

Not all leaky roofs need to be replaced. In some cases, people can repair and restore their roof. But first, you should seek expert assistance and get a professional to inspect your roof. Ask for an honest assessment on your roof. This way, you could be surer with what to do next.

What type of shingle does your roof have? In any case, you’re right with wanting to replace the damaged shingles rather than doing a patch job. Have you had an experience on repairing roofs before? If it wouldn’t cost that much maybe you can use hired help, because even though yours was a low roof, it didn’t make the process of installation less tricky.

Yes, individual shingles can be replaced. But if majority of the shingles have deteriorated beyond repair, replacing the entire roof may be a better idea. Replacing a few shingles can be a simple job. Use a hacksaw blade so you can remove both the nails and the shingles.

Check first the condition of the shingles. If your roof is more than 20 years old and badly worn out, then it is time to replace the whole roof. It would be good to replace the entire roof rather than fixing a single shingle from time to time as it would cost more and need more work.
