No matter what you pick, the job is messy. As is always recommended with any type of solvents, try it in an inconspicuous corner first. Â

All external application Tex-Cote coatings can be removed with Methyl Ethyl Ketone (a.k.a. MEK Solvent, a.k.a. 2-butanon), acetone or Xylol . MEK works best but Xylol is easier sourced since big box hardware stores carry it and you would not need to pay hazmat shipping rates. Acetone is also widely available but is so nasty, I don't have a heart recommending it. Still, if you have a good respiratory protection - it's your call. MEK and Xylol are more toxic and irritant through the skin than through inhaling and it's a bit easier to protect the skin by wearing long sleeves, gloves and goggles.Â
