Store the router with the plate upside down - i.e. on top of the table instead of hanging underneath. That will produce a slight crown, which is not as bad (though a significant crown is). The Veritas router table is slightly crowned.

"Routerman" Pat Warner makes much the same case on his web site. There are other ways of dealing with accessing the router and a plate.
But I use the Veritas circular plate. The plate sits flush to 1-1/2" of MDF laminated to formica. With a little care you can have a very solid set up and flush as well.
