Review of Shaker Box class at John Campbell Folk School - NC

OK, first the disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with the school, just a satisfied customer.

Both my wife and I attended the school this last weekend, October 19 -

  1. I took the Shaker box class and she took a intro basketry class. The classes ran from 5:30 PM Friday for check in to Sunday 1PM departure.

This was one of the best weekends i have had in a long time. The instructor was from an Atlana museum and had been teaching for over 10 years. All the students but one completed a full set of 5 nesting Shaker boxes. The one student that did not finish had completed enough that she could finish the remaining 2 at home. Information about the uses, techniques and materials were presented throught the weekend. Advice on types of wood (if you were building non traditional boxes), repairs and finishing were also provided. A great learning experience.

The facilities were well kept and all rooms were very clean, although tiny. No TV, or radios are in the rooms (you can bring you own radio). Quiet time after 10PM, made for a relaxing time. Food was simple but well prepared and varied. Weekends are very compressed with 3 class sessions on Saturday but week long classes end at supper time.

Both my wife and I are looking forward to an entire week (or more) out there next year. I would be happy to answer any other questions you have or you can contact the school directly.
