I use Transtint Dyes that I get from Jeff Jewitt, over at www.homesteadfinishing.com
I use it as a toner for the exact purpose you describe and it works very well.
Jeff's site has forums and archives that can answer your questions and he also answers many questions personally.

Mohwk ultra stains can be mixed with lacquer for tinting purposes. Do not make the tinting lacquer too intense ,better to apply several coats of lightly tinted laquer ....mjh
