Not exactly a new idea. When I was a kid (eons ago ;-) I read an adventure comic book (Foreign Legion or similar) where the hero had bacon frying and the good guys dipped their bullets in the liquid fat. It worked in the comic book ;-)
DAGS of "Indian Rebellion" or Sepoy Mutiny of 1858. Google has an exhaustive and interesting article focusing on the cause of the mutiney and its relationship to cartridges from the Enfield rifle which were required to be bitten and even though they contained animal fat.
According to the article it was one of the triggers of the uprising in the Indian army. It's way OT but shows that this is not a new situation by any means.
The following has been pretty much relegated to being an urben legend but if someting similar were to be spread around the war zones as if it were a fact .....
