Laguna Platnium 16/32 Sand Paper Issues?

I have a buddy who purchased the Laguna 16/32 sander and has a problem getting the paper inserted correctly on the end - it seems there is some issue with the clip holding the paper - Laguna tech support hasn't been helpful at all. Has anyone experienced this issue - do you know of a fix I could pass along. Thanks in advance for your help. Dale

I don't know that machine but it sure looks like a Performax inspired one. On the Performax, one opens the clip with a finger, inserts paper *and then moves one's finger parallel and clockwise to the drum before releasing the clip*. If you just insert and release clip, the clip doesn't grab the paper.

If it is like the Performax you need to have a long enough tail on the paper to go deep down inside the motor side clip. The motor side clip is double spring loaded. One spring holds the paper while the other spring applies a constant pull to help keep the paper tight as it expands from heat. Needless to say, start winding the paper on the left side towards the right, motor side.

Make sure he is using the special tool for holding the spring open and collapsed so that then the tool is removed the clamp grabs and pulls the paper. The paper should be tight with no slack before removing the tool.

This is pretty much an acquired technique and practice makes perfect.
