"I Pulled Out Of Pittsburg Headin' Down The Eastern Seaboard..."

But freight? Easily handled by rail... at least a great big chunk of it. There is a network in place already that can be used while the expansion and electrification is underway. All you have to do is look at what it costs to send a 20 ton 40-foot container from LA to NY via rail and via truck.. in terms of fuel consumed.

Locomotives, the original hybrids. V16 and V20 diesels with pistons 10 inches in diameter, turbochargers all to power a generator and a compressor.

What do you call trucks carpooling? A train.

If you do something like the road-railers or Triple Crown does, you don't even need to pick the trailer up at a yard. A quiet stretch of tracks would be enough to remove the trailer and send it on to its destination. (I don't know that they ever do this... but...)

You have not had to fill up a Chevy 2500 truck lately huh Lew ???

With a 32 gallon tank and 3.66, it is a tad more than $100.

I hate to get involved in what is essentially a political thread, but....

Former WA. State governor Dixie Lee Ray (a huge proponent of nuclear energy) once said that we needed to carefully store all of our nuclear waste because sooner or later we would figure out how to extract the remaining energy from it and it would be a tremendously valuable resource.

The thing on nuclear waste is that it is really pretty benign compared to what fossil fuels are doing to us.

Try $150 for 35 gallons of diesel.

Not really.

About the only thing that clicks are 18 wheelers with 100+ gallon saddle tanks and $5/gal diesel which translates into more than $1K/fill up (GULP)

If you can't think of any more examples, I can offer a few. That's what the "etc." means.

I can think of plenty of examples where it is not an option. Most of my working life I have had jobs where I worked irregular hours and don't go to the same place every day, I ride a motorcycle anytime there's not snow or ice on the road and I don't have to carry more than it can handle, and people still preach at me about how I should be carpooling and telecommuting and the like.

I've gotten to the point that I am just plain sick and tired of people preaching about this crap. It's a band-aid for the lack of foresight that let us remain dependent on fossil petroleum even though nuclear has been a viable alternative for baseload power for half a century.

a laugh. And I totally enjoyed the comments at the bottom of the article.

(btw.. I /know/ it is not a genuine product in the Ford line-up, but it would sell.)

Bubba would love it.

As for me, have never been interested in vehicles other than as an abolute necessity.

They are a piece of personal property with rapid depreciation that you get in, drive 60,000 miles to the next dealer, get out and into another one to start the process all over.

I see a distinction between transport and sport. I spend as little as I can on transportation, but will spend on a fun drive through twisty roads with gobs of power at my foot.

I think I have a better understanding now of what a bubba is. He's the guy that paints a big number '3' or '28' or what have you on his car/ truck and then goes to the races with all his right-wing near-beer swilling buddies and watch all those NASCAR driver trying to get all those right-wing thoughts out of their heads by turning left for a couple of hours.

racing actually requires skill and strategy, not to mention serious technology.
