Can you use a compound miter saw to make long, lengthwise cuts on boards or are they only good for short cuts across boards?

Long cuts, or ripping, cannot be done on a compound miter saw - only crosscutting.

Only a similar looking Radial Arm Saw can also make length wise rips on a board. Not to be confused with what Bruce Johnson on Wood Working calls a radial arm saw. He is clueless.
