Why is it that on dining table one cannot use armchairs on the side? Wouldn't it be more comfortable if everybody can rest their arms? Why are the chairs on the side w/o arms? Very curious!

Why is it that on dining table one has arms on the end chairs?
Yes. It's an English class thing, copied by America around 1900. Armed chairs or "carvers" are less comfortable, but they have higher status for the paterfamilias.
