zanussi pulley and clutch removal - how to?

I have a Zanussi Washier/dryer Model RWD1002 at least 15 years old which has been very reliable over the years I have owned it but it now has brokendown. One day recently the drum stopped rotating and it will no longer spin or rotate in the washing cycle. The pump seems to work as it fills and drains properly. I had a look underneath and found one of two clutch shoe springs (from the clutch mechanism on the pulley end of the motor shaft) lying on the floor.

I removed and inspected the motor and the pulley clutch mechanism. What has happened is the lug on the casting of one of the clutch shoes which retains the spring has snapped off, the spring has fallen off and so the clutch no longer works.

Can anyone please advise me how to get the pulley and clutch assembly off the motor main shaft? All I can see is a retaining circlip on the main shaft at the pulley end just below the clutch shoes but access is obstructed by the shoes.

Does anyone know if replacement clutch shoes are available or whether I would have to buy a replacement clutch / pulley mechanism or a complete motor with clutch and pulley? Or, indeed, am I wasting my time completely.

The motor is a ZEM model number 20571 034 The two clutch shoes are identical and have the number 25544,001 cast onto them

It seems a shame to have to scrap the machine just because of a tiny bit of metal snapped off with fatigue.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated

Thanks

You might want to ask here

've searched the archive and your machine does not come up but there might just be someone there who will know. Can you get circlip pliers in. Without wishing to state the obvious - it must come apart some how. If it is not the circlip then is there a collar that could be pulled off. Maybe the shoes have to be held apart to get the clip off?

Good luck

I cant get both arms of the circlip pilers in. The clutch shoes are partially obstructing my way in and though I can force them apart a littl, its not enough.

I'll maybe try going in from the motor side and opening up the motor casing.

Thanks for the advice. I took a look at the Halfords / Haynes manual which is quite detailed but unfortunately didnt seem to cover a machine with a clutch assembly like mine.

I'll try the Yahoo group. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the adice AlistairC wrote:
