Worn stair carpet

The lowest tread on our stair carpet has become quite worn on the nose. The rest of the carpet is good quality and in good condition. Rather than replace the carpet, or run the risk of the wear getting worse, I was wondering about about fitting perhaps some sort of rubber tread as one sees quite often in shops etc. just on the bottom tread. I've tried googling for such an item but can't come up with anything - not helped (as usual) by not really knowing what to call it! Any suggestions?

TIA

Keith

Check to see if the carpet on the bottom step is separate from the rest of the stairs run. If it is, there may be spare tucked under the riser just above that will allow you to move the worn section down and out of sight.

The brass nosings look horribly expensive. The staircase was open plan, so each step is carpeted separately, so moving the worn section isn't an option. Has anyone any other ideas?

Remove it, rotate it 180 degrees and re attach it?

Take the most top thread carpet off and fit it on the bottom thread and fit the worn carpet on the top thread only turn it round the opposite way to hide the worn part?

Is the carpet around the step like a sleeve? If it is, the join will be underneath the step and you could move the carpet around it so the join goes further to the back and the worn part disappears underneath.

Turn the carpet top to bottom? The chances of the wear falling in the same place are remote. But it's better to do this before the wear shows too much.

Father in law did that.

He wasn't best pleased when SWMBO came home from work and asked how all the baskets of flowers on the stair carpet had turned upside down.

Heh heh. Right. But my answer still stands as readers of this group have more taste than to have flowery carpets.

Father in law should have told her the carpet had always been upside down....depending in which direction you were going ;-)

Spanish galleons, pirate ships, on the main. Mmmm. They look silly upside down as well.

(You brought flooding back memories of a pub called The Bounty in Lytham St Annes. Which had that. And a fishtank with live fishes over the very long bar.)

But they will be the right way up when coming down the stairs... ;-)
