Ask customer services at your local DIY shed. They may just have a section of worktop from an old display they have pulled down. The whole thing normally gets dumped in the skip. We got a bit of worktop and a cupboard that way. It's also well worth asking if they have any off cuts that people don't want from the in-house cutting service, if they have one. Some joiners ask for cuts on materials and leave the odd bits they don't need and it saves them trying to get rid of it.

Have you thought of using a piece of 20mm granite worktop?

well as its just a shelf in the bathroom on top of boxing, it only needs to be the thinner type, offcuts may be an idea but if its kitchen off cuts it might only be the thicker 38mm worktop? do you know if b and q sell the bathroom worktops seperately, i know they do cabinets and doors customised as you want but i couldnt see worktops in there when i was in there last.

I used a plain white IKEA cupboard door. It has rolled edges like a thinner version of a kitchen worktop. The pictures on the IKEA website are too poor to see which it was, but it might have been HÄRLIG

you are cutting down the length, then one end will lose its sealed finished edge.

It cost £1 from the damaged corner, but even a new one would cost only £9.

I posted pictures recently:

Yes. Melamine faced chipboard, same as kitchen carcasses etc. Comes in 6 foot lengths and a variety of widths (incl 200mm IIRC), so you just cut it to length. Widely available in white but other colours too at larger sheds and timber merchants.

had a look in b and q , contiboard is too thin, and i also want a rounded edge like proper worktop. i asked at the bathroom section and was told they stopped selling worktops for bathrooms. so the search goes on... kitchen worktop is too thick, i did look at the cutting shop in b n q for spare bits.

Magnet - and probably lots of other places - do 28mm, rather than the usual

38mm, worktops if that's any help.

The granite is nearly always 20mm thick - the kitchen worktops that look thicker have a double thickness along the front edge only. B&Q won't do it, we're talking quality here! :) Go to a marble/granite suppliers. I got several offcuts to make small worktops in my bathroom - window cill, bath shelf. You can cut it yourself with a wet diamond wheel cutter or get them to cut it to size for you, but you probably need to ask them to round off and polish the exposed edges.

enquired in b and q and you can order bathroom worktop but the basic gloss 2m length is =A361, same with bathstore.. seems a lot seeing as you can get a 2m length full depth worktop from wickes for =A320. problem is i want a dark colour and wickes only do grey or white... hmmmmmm !!! any ideas?

If you go to a specialist worktop supplier (back in the UK I used Stantons, Weybridge) they will offer you a choice of hundreds of colours (about 20 varieties of black in my case). Trouble is you would have to buy a full length, which would not be cheap, but if you're not too fussed about the particular shade, you might well get an offcut for less.

Alternatively ask on Freecycle, as someone may have a left over.
