Worktop edging.

I need to fit some edging strips to the ends of my kitchen worktop. I have got the correct colour-matched stuff from B&Q - but it's not the iron-on type or self-adhesive in any way.

What is the best way to stick this to the worktop edge? And then what is the best way to trim the excess flush to the worktop? Especially at the rounded egde at the front.

Mark.

If the ends are cut and exposed chipboard, varnish them well first otherwise water WILL get into the edges and destroy them.

Impact adhesive (eg evostik)

I use a sharp stanley knife blade, but it is tricky, especially at the rounded front as you've realised. Wait until the glue is completely set. It's best finished off with fine glass paper BUT only applied with a flat backing (eg bit of timber) and held carefully at 45 degrees to the worktop, otherwise of course you'll scratch the worktop and edging to hell.

Unless your worktop colour is very pale, you'll also end up with a thin white line demarking the edge of the worktop (due to the cut thickness of the edging strip IYSWIM - I run a dark marker pen down this which stops the eye being drawn straight to it.

Impact adhesive, but sand the end first so that it is smooth.

Position the strip so that it is flush with the lower edge of the worktop. use the side of a tool such as a chisel held at 45 degrees to the horizontal and 45 degrees to the edge and push into the worktop and along the line of the edge. You are using the side of the chisel and the edge of the worktop as a pair of scissor blades to cut the surplus off. Very difficult to describe, but I was shown how by an experienced carpenter and it works every time. Try to first on a piece of scrap.

Useful tip that - thanks.

Plasplugs used to make a little plastic edge trimmer which was brilliant. Still got mine, but you can't get blades anymore.

And whatever you do, don't run your fingers down the freshly cut edge of the worktop a la 'that looks like neat job' stylee....it can slice them open ( got two of mine ).
