Wickes Radiator - How do I get the water in...

I have purchased a Wickes radiator. See photo 01 at ...

I'm a little bemused.

At one corner there is a threaded hole (photo 02). All three other corners (photo 03) are blank. Have I got to break through to the hole or perhaps drill tap my own? Hmm...

Thanks, Roy

There should be a hole in the pack of fittings along with the wallplugs, screws etc. If it's missing I'd take it back to the shop[1] and ask if they've got one with the holes already fitted.

[1] You might get a long weight at the same time.

John,

Thanks for your help.

I have also been looking for sky hooks.. perhaps they can help with that too :-)

Presumably the three 'blank' corners have simply got temporary plastic plugs fitted, and in the case of the corner with the hole, the plug has fallen out. Hard to confirm from the photo though.

You often find these blanks in place; presumably they are to stop paint getting all over the internal thread when the rad is sprayed.

Obviously you only need to use two of the four holes; I'd have expected the rad to be supplied separately with permanant metal blanking plugs to fit the unused holes.

=============================== One of the blanked ends may have a screwed blanking plug with paint concealing the join.

If there is genuinely no second threaded opening then the radiator may be designed for use with a twin entry valve which is quite a likely possibility since this is a 'designer' radiator.

Look at this:

a picture of a rather ancient and grotty twin entry valve. They're usually used with microbore systems.

Oooppps... Red face time....

The holes are not on the ends of the bottom rail, they are on the bottom of it. Cunningly concealed by the packaging...

Nah Nah Nah !

What you really need is a skirting board ladder to help you up to the bottom of the radiator and fill it from underneath through the crack in the weld then carefully peening the crack over with a glass hammer. When finished remember to paint it with Tartan paint to finish off .

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember "RzB" saying something like:

Simply pour the water in using a small funnel. Keep the three blanks in place and nip down to your nearest Plum Center and ask them to give you one.
